Gravestone Cleaning Across North Carolina
Headstones in North Carolina weather differently depending on what they are made of and when they were set. Cemeteries across the state hold a rough sequence: soapstone and slate on the oldest colonial-era markers, then marble through most of the nineteenth century, then granite from roughly the 1900s onward as quarrying and transport made it affordable. Each of those stones fails in its own way, and each needs a different approach.
Marble is the one that causes most of the damage we are called to correct. It is calcium carbonate, so it dissolves slowly in acidic rain, and its surface sugars – the crystal structure opens up and the stone begins shedding grains. A marble marker that has gone chalky cannot be scrubbed clean; scrubbing removes stone, not soil. Granite is far harder and tolerates more, which is why well-meaning family members who cleaned a granite stone successfully sometimes destroy a marble one using the same method.
North Carolina’s climate compounds it. Long humid summers, mild wet winters and heavy tree cover across most of the Piedmont and coastal plain make ideal conditions for biological growth – lichen, algae and moss are the most common thing obscuring an inscription here, not dirt. Lichen in particular grips into the stone surface and pulls grains away when it is scraped off, which is why removal has to be chemical and slow rather than mechanical and fast.
How We Clean, and What We Refuse to Do
Two things we will not do, on any stone in any cemetery: pressure-wash, and use household bleach. Pressure washing drives water into the stone and strips the surface of anything softer than granite. Bleach leaves salts behind that keep drawing moisture through the stone for years afterwards. The accepted standard for historic markers is a biological cleaner formulated for stone, applied gently and left to work over weeks – and it is worth knowing that a properly cleaned marker often continues to lighten for months after the visit.
North Carolina’s humid, subtropical climate is hard on cemetery stone – warm, damp summers create ideal conditions for the lichen, algae, and mold that darken and obscure headstones faster here than in drier states. That is especially true in the older, more shaded sections common in North Carolina cemeteries.
